The Use Of Adjuvants For Reducing Spray Drift

Spray drift is an important consideration in the application of agricultural chemicals. There are a number of strategies that can be used to reduce spray drift including selecting nozzles that produce larger droplet sizes, lowering the release height and only spraying in suitable weather conditions. Another method used for reducing spray drift is to add an appropriate adjuvant to the spray mix. If an adjuvant is added to the spray mix, that can produce fewer fine droplets, then it is likely that drift from the spray application will be reduced. Other factors such as evaporation of the droplets, efficacy of the spray mix and compatibility statements on the chemical label also need to be considered when selecting an adjuvant. This fact sheet summarises the effect of ten different adjuvants on droplet size from a range of nozzles used for both ground and aerial application. It also presents selected results from a field trial conducted by CPAS that measured the drift from an aircraft when some of the adjuvants were used.

Brush control demonstration - District 1-0
Low volume foliar applications are effective techniques for controlling roadside brush up to 20 ft in height. This method does not require the applicator to refill as often and provides a selective application which minimizes the damage to the surrounding groundcover. Two low volume foliar techniques were used in District 1-0 during the 1993 season. The applications included treatment with backpack sprayers or a truck-based handgun.
